What does it mean to be FEARLESS?
I got schooled this evening when searching the formal definition of Fearless…YOLO. That has been an acronym that has been showing up a lot lately. Apparently it is somehow related to being fearless, so for all you old crippled folks from my generation, listen up! YOLO, an informal abbreviation for “You OnLy Live Once” is a term used by the younger generations which expresses the view that one should make the most of the present moment with out worrying about the future. I’m so relieved to finally understand what YOLO stands for, however, I am going to be referring to a much more important understanding: the meaning of FEARLESS. The kind that Daniel displayed in Daniel chapter 6, where this fearless man of God showed a beautiful example of shunning rejection in order to fearlessly glorify God.
Fear of rejection, controversy…fear of being misunderstood. Is this not the perfect subject to emerge in, like a hot mineral bath after a trying day of household multitasking?! Praise God for having the preacher create a sermon this evening…just for me! Ha, well, I guess I shouldn’t allow narcissism invade my fearless focus…and I definitely won’t be using the term YOLO in reference to the fearlessness I desperately need.
In all seriousness, my greatest fear is failing God.
My prayer: Lord, Remove the fear which continues to reside in me– the fear that prevents me from fully living for You and Your purpose.
My Focus: To meditate on God’s precious Word, specifically in Daniel 6, and diligently practice Daniel’s examples.
Daniel had such amazing character that the high standing officials became so fearful of Daniel’s greatness that jealousy overtook them to the point they tried to get Daniel to waiver in his faith. Personally, I think these men sound a lot like some high school gals I used to know… Please read the passage in Daniel 6 and you’ll see exactly the drama I’m referring to.
“But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with it’s windows open toward Jerulsalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God.” -Daniel 6:10 NLT
Can you see the fearlessness in that man? His adversaries had just convinced the king, who loved Daniel like crazy, to sign a law stating that no god (in Daniel’s case, God) could be worshiped for 30 days or they would be punished by death in the lion’s den. Here’s where it gets really personal for me- Daniel openly continues his devotion to his GOD! He could’ve hid his prayer routines, therefore, retreating around the punishment and snare laid before him.
Lesson: we have CHOICES in life to “skirt” around the world, hiding behind closed doors with our faith- OR be like Daniel, faithful and courageously fearless. God had Daniel’s back and he definitely has ours, if we ditch our fear of the world. Follow our Lord. Show Him we truly love Him and honor Him. FEARLESSLY worship Him. Sorry, kiddos, YOLO is out, unless living in the moment means not wasting another moment in hiding your Faith behind closed doors. I’m so incredibly guilty of hiding my faith, however, it is clear to me that God is FULL of GRACE. With prayer and persistence I know I will become more fearless every moment as I walk in obedience to our Lord.
“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 1:6
So very blessed,
Ps- If you happen to be young, please don’t take offense to my YOLO references- I promise you, the older generations had plenty of interesting slang that I never figured out or understood, either. The bottom line: we are ALL preciously made in His image.
